The works shown here were produced through an invitation to critically engage with the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art held at the Ottawa Art Gallery. Searching the vaults, I chose one work each by four artists in the collection: A. Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, Edmund Alleyn and Anne Savage. In choosing the criteria of no horizon line, no architecture nor any people, I was able to narrow the range of works I wanted to investigate further. Employing the idea of rhizomes, my response pieces started with the theme of underground lateral branching rather than deep roots nationalisms. Research and conceptual development for this project was begun in December 2014 and all works were produced in my studio between the summer of 2015 and the summer of 2016.
