Gail Bourgeois

Artist – 1985 to Present
Over the years, I have produced site-sensitive installation works for solo and group shows, maintained a research-based drawing practice and exhibited regularly. The themes and methods of my practice express the tension between academic knowledge and experimental forms of knowledge based on my interest in collective practices, community engagement and a self-managed art practice.

Independent Curator – 1996 to 2004
In addition to numerous local curatorial projects, I researched, organized and brought to fruition seven large-scale exhibitions including one travelling exhibition.

Independent Writer – 1985 to 2008
Published articles, reviews and catalogue essays in major Canadian and British journals.

Conference Papers and Presentations – 1987 to 2002
Regularly presented my ideas on art and culture at academic conferences and through public lectures and gallery invitations. Member, University Art Association of Canada (1993-2004)

Administration – 2006 to 2014
Fine Arts Diploma Program Coordinator, Ottawa School of Art: advisor to sixty students, worked in a supervisory capacity with nineteen instructors, liaised with eight staff members, developed programming, recruited new students and instructors and served on various education and selection committees. Initiated and developed a unique mentorship program in contemporary crafts (2006-2011).

Teaching and Mentoring – 1987 to 2015
Over twenty years of teaching experience: including developing and teaching university lecture courses, teaching studio-based drawing and painting courses and mentoring in drawing and 2-d design. Mentored in the Concordia University Alumni Mentor Program (1998-1999)

Technician – 1973 to 1983, 1991 to 2001
Twenty years experience working in the access services areas of academic libraries: supervising full time and part-time employees, report writing, policy interpreting, organizing and directing committee work. In artist-run centres, I have created and developed projects by establishing priorities for funding, selecting participants, and managing large projects.
